NEW YORK--Peter Zaffino, executive vp and head of U.S. treaty operations for Guy Carpenter & Co. L.L.C., has been named chief executive officer of the New York-based reinsurance brokerage as part of a leadership reorganization by parent Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc.

Mr. Zaffino, who joined Guy Carpenter in 2001 from GE Capital Services, succeeds David Spiller, who has left the company, an MMC spokeswoman said. Mr. Spiller joined Guy Carpenter as president in 2006, after serving as president of Benfield Ltd.

Mr. Zaffino's father, Salvatore D. Zaffino, served as chairman of Guy Carpenter from 1999 to 2007, when he retired and became nonexecutive chairman.

In addition, Britt Newhouse, president of Guy Carpenter's Americas broking operations, has been named chairman.

Messrs. Zaffino and Newhouse will report directly to Brian Duperreault, president and CEO of MMC. The appointments are the first made by Mr. Duperreault, who took over the helm of MMC late last month, succeeding Michael G. Cherkasky.
