BISMARCK, N.D.--North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Jim Poolman said Tuesday he will resign at the end of the month to start a consulting business.

Mr. Poolman, whose last day in office will be Aug. 31, plans to advise clients on life/health insurance issues from an office in Bismarck, N.D., according to his spokeswoman.

The 37-year-old Republican officeholder is serving his second four-year term as the state's elected insurance commissioner--a post to which he was elected in 2000 and re-elected in 2004. Before that, he served four terms in the North Dakota House of Representatives.

Mr. Poolman, who is married and has three children, said his resignation is prompted be a desire to better provide for his family, according to letter he sent to North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven.
