Swett & Crawford Group's knowledge of the marketplace allows it to provide independent agents and brokers with quality service.

This expertise has helped Swett & Crawford win the best insurance wholesaler category in Business Insurance's 2007 Readers Choice Awards, the third year in a row it has received the honor.

The recognition most likely comes from the daily level of attention Swett & Crawford producers pour on their retail broker clients rather than from any new company strategies, says J. Neal Abernathy, Swett & Crawford's president and chief executive officer.

"It's focusing on taking care of our clients," Mr. Abernathy said. "We try to emphasize how critical it is to put ourselves in our agents' shoes."

That means returning agents' telephone calls, responding to their submittals and finding coverage solutions for their policyholders.

"We are just doing a really good job with the basics," Mr. Abernathy said. "But you have to have the intellectual firepower to come up with the solutions you need."

To help Swett & Crawford producers come up with the insurance coverage solutions, the wholesaler over a year ago organized six practice groups. The practice groups include property, casualty, energy, professional services, transportation and underwriting.

Swett & Crawford brokers have gradually learned they can turn to experts within their own company's practice groups for the intellectual resources needed to solve coverage challenges their clients face, Mr. Abernathy said.

Ultimately, word makes its way to the policyholders that Swett & Crawford has the resources to find insurance markets, Mr. Abernathy added.
