Worker deaths up in 2006/2007: HSE

LONDON—The number of employees killed at work in the 2006/2007 year was 241, up from a record low of 217 in 2005/2006, according to figures from the U.K. Health and Safety Executive.

Most deaths were in the service industry sector, which recorded 85 fatalities —or 0.35 deaths per 100,000 workers — in the year to April 2007, according to the London-based HSE's statistics.

The construction industry accounted for 77 fatalities, or 3.7 deaths per 100,000 workers.

The manufacturing industry saw 35 deaths, or 1.1 fatalities per 100,000 employees, while the agriculture sector recorded 34 deaths, a rate of 8.1 deaths per 100,000 workers, the HSE said.
