Trial date set for former Oklahoma insurance head

TULSA, Okla.--A Tulsa County judge has set a trial date for former Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner Carroll Fisher on a charge of filing a false 1999 income tax return.

District Judge Dana Kuehn on Monday scheduled the trial for Feb. 11, 2008, in Tulsa County. The case, originally filed in Oklahoma County in 2004, was transferred earlier this year to Tulsa County, where Mr. Fisher resides and where he signed his tax return, according to a spokesman for the Oklahoma attorney general's office.

Mr. Fisher, who resigned as Oklahoma's elected insurance commissioner in 2004, was convicted in 2006 of embezzling from his campaign funds and of lying on a campaign report. He was sentenced to three years in prison and fined $20,000, but he is appealing that conviction.

He faces other charges in Oklahoma County, including accepting a bribe, failing to pay an unspecified amount of collected fees to the state and three charges related to illegally operation of a charity. No trial date has been set on those charges.
