GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Posted On: Jul. 22, 2007 12:00 AM CST

The American Medical Assn. has developed principles it considers critical to the development of "fair and equitable" doctor-rating programs, including:

  • Ensuring the active involvement of physicians and provider organizations in all aspects.

  • Disclosing the methods for collecting and analyzing data to the organizations and physicians under review.

  • Clearly identifying and acknowledging any limitations on the data sources used to develop profiles.

  • Basing physician profiles on valid, accurate and objective data and using them primarily for educational purposes.

  • Using standards-based norms derived from widely accepted, physician-developed practice parameters whenever possible.

  • Sharing physician profiles and other information compiled with physicians under review.
