BRUSSELS, Belgium—Insurers in Belgium paid claims of more than $293 million related to Windstorm Kyrill, which hit northern Europe in January, according to an industry body.

The Belgian insurance industry paid claims of more than €213 million ($293 million) for damage caused by the storm, almost double initial estimates, according to Brussels-based Assuralia, which represents insurers in Belgium.

The storm is estimated to have caused total insured losses in Europe of about €3.5 billion ($4.8 billion), Assuralia said in a statement.
