INSURERS:

Bermuda-based Max Bermuda Ltd. has promoted Angelo M. Guagliano to president and chief executive officer, from executive vp and chief underwriting officer. Former CEO W. Marston Becker remains chairman of Max Bermuda as well as chairman and CEO of parent Max Capital Group Ltd.

Workers compensation insurer Builders Insurance Group in Atlanta has appointed Chief Operating Officer Patrick Mitchell to the additional post of president. In addition, Renee Pinczes will join the company as chief financial officer, a post previously held by Mr. Mitchell. Previously, Ms. Pinczes was a senior vp and CFO for AssuranceAmerica Corp.

New York-based Assurant Inc. has named Peter Walker senior vp, risk and advisory services. Before his promotion, he was vp, Securities and Exchange Commission reporting and compliance.

Chubb Corp. has named Melissa Powers technology insurance specialty practice leader in Boston. Before her promotion, she was assistant practice leader.

Armonk, N.Y.-based Hiscox USA has named Eric Pruss COO. Mr. Pruss joins Hiscox from the Chubb Corp., where he spent more than nine years in corporate development marketing and was senior vp of strategic marketing for Chubb's personal insurance products.

New York-based New York Life Insurance Co. named Sara Badler senior vp and deputy general counsel. Previously, she was first vp and deputy general counsel.

Philadelphia-based ACE USA has named Brian Witzmann senior vp and regional executive officer for the company's Northwest region in San Francisco. He will be responsible for Alaska, Northern California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Before joining ACE, he was senior vp and excess casualty national real estate and financial institutions practice leader for American International Group Inc.

Randy D. Rinicella has joined Houston-based HCC Insurance Holdings Inc. as senior vp and general counsel. Before joining HCC, he was vp, general counsel and secretary of Dresser-Rand Group Inc.

MANAGED CARE:

Point Richmond, Calif.-based MHN Inc., a Health Net Inc. company, has appointed Juanell Hefner COO, a newly created position. Previously, she was vp of customer solutions at Health Net of California.

REINSURANCE:

Bermuda-based D.E. Shaw Group has appointed Darren Redhead chief underwriting officer of D.E. Shaw Re (Bermuda) Ltd., a recently formed Bermuda-based reinsurance company focused on the property catastrophe market. He previously was syndicate deputy underwriter of Lloyd's of London syndicate Talbot Underwriting Ltd.

Jennifer Barth has joined Buck Consultants L.L.C.'s Chicago office as director of its health and welfare consulting practice. Previously, she was an assistant vp in the health and welfare practice of Aon Consulting.

Farmington Hills, Mich.-based managing general agent Burns & Wilcox Ltd. has made several senior-level appointments. The executives also have corporate responsibility to Burns & Wilcox parent H.W. Kaufman Financial Group.

c Gary Batten has been promoted to senior vp from vp of Burns & Wilcox. In addition to his continued management of the New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La., offices, he also is responsible for Burns & Wilcox's Atlanta; Little Rock, Ark.; and Birmingham, Ala., offices.

c Donald Carson has been promoted to senior vp from vp. He retains responsibility for the Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston offices. He also is responsible for Kaufman Financial Group/Burns & Wilcox special projects and operations.
