INTERNET GAMBLING PROBLEM

Posted On: Jun. 24, 2007 12:00 AM CST

According to Isabelle Duguay, coordinator of problem gambling at Bensinger, Dupont & Associates, a Chicago EAP provider, employers should take the following steps to deal with Internet gambling in the workplace:

  • Create a workplace gambling policy. A clear, consistently applied policy defining prohibited and permitted activities will help make sure workplace gambling doesn't spin out of control.

  • Provide awareness training. Without awareness, problem gambling cannot be detected. Training can help managers and employees recognize the warning signs and be prepared to offer appropriate assistance.

  • Make problem gambling counseling available. Problem gambling is a mental health disorder that needs immediate and appropriate attention. At-risk employees can get confidential help from a company's EAP.
