Civil union bills advance in Ore., N.H.

Two states have taken steps toward the recognition of civil unions for same-sex couples.

Oregon's House of Representatives approved a bill Tuesday that would create legal recognition of domestic partnerships for same-sex couples. Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski released a statement pledging his support of the measure, which still must be considered by the Senate.

Meanwhile, New Hampshire's Senate next week will vote on a measure establishing civil unions for same-sex couples. The New Hampshire House recently approved the bill, which Gov. John Lynch says he will sign, according to a spokesman in his office.

Vermont, New Jersey, and Massachusetts already have approved civil unions, following court orders in those states.
