Golf, tennis fund-raising efforts expected to increase

For some, a Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc. conference would not be complete without a trip to the golf course or tennis court.

After a down year in Hawaii, which had lower-than-average participation, the 16th annual Spencer/Gallagher Golf Tournament, held in conjunction with the RIMS conference, should be packed.

According to Yvette Gomez, a tournament organizer and account manager for Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., both courses will be used for the New Orleans tournament.

The Carter Plantation in Springfield, La., is an 18-hole, par-72 course designed by former PGA champion David Toms. According to the U.S. Golf Assn. Web site, the course is rated 74.4 from the black tees and recently was named one of the "Top 10 Courses You Can Play" by Golf Magazine.

The Oaks Golf Club has been rated one of the best places to play by Golf Digest. It's an 18-hole, par-72 course in Pass Christian, Miss., with a rating of 72.2 from the championship tees.

The 2006 golf tournament in Hawaii raised $60,000 for the Spencer Educational Foundation, down from the $76,000 raised in San Diego in 2005. But fund-raising should be back up this year, as the tournament has neared its limit of 288 golfers.

To register for the tournament, contact Ms. Gomez at 225-906-1218, or yvette_gomez@ajg.com.

Club rental is available and, the $325 entry fee includes greens fees, cart, breakfast, lunch, two mulligans, transportation, range balls and drinks on the course.

Separately, the Spencer/Logic Tennis Tournament is entering its 13th year and will be held April 29 beginning at 9 a.m. at the WOW Cafe Tennis Center in New Orleans. The entrance fee of $75 includes transportation, lunch and the awards ceremony.

Bill Perry, president of Logic Associates, said there are still openings for the tournament, "but we've filled up nicely this year." To sign up, or for more information, call 212-227-8000 or send an e-mail to bperry@logicassociates.com.
