LONDON—Research from the U.K. Health and Safety Executive shows that a manager's behavior can have a major impact on employees' stress levels affecting the well-being of employees and organizational performance.

With more than 5 million employees in the U.K. reporting that they feel extremely stressed at work, this is an increasing problem for all organizations, said the HSE.

The HSE has also produced a suite of guidance products designed to help public sector organizations improve their management of sickness absence. It said the guides are designed to promote:

  • Monitoring, measuring and understanding sickness absence
  • Managing sickness absence when it happens
  • Tackling the underlying causes of absence
  • A culture that encourages attendance
