Greenberg's Aquiline backs new Lloyd's insurer

LONDON—Aquiline Capital Partners L.L.C., Whittington Group, Swiss Reinsurance Co. and Lehman Brothers Co-Investment Partners have announced the launch of Ark Syndicate Management Ltd, a Lloyd's of London-based underwriting agency.

New-York based private equity firm Aquiline is the lead investor, and its managing principal, Jeffrey Greenberg, will be chairman of the Bermuda-based holding company, Group Ark Insurance Holdings Ltd.

The Lloyd's insurer will be managed by several former employees of Aspen Insurance Holdings. Ark's Cief Executive officer is Ian Beaton, former head of insurance at Aspen. Nick Bonnar, most recently head of specialty lines at Aspen, is Ark's director of underwriting. The two men are joined by David Foreman, Ark's chief underwriting officer, formerly of Wellington Syndicate 2020.

Ark Syndicate Management Limited has been approved by the Financial Services Authority and Lloyd's Franchise Board for Lloyd's Syndicate 4020. It will begin writing policies incepting from 1st April. It will underwrite a diversified, balanced book of insurance and reinsurance in marine, energy, property and casualty classes. It has a stamp capacity of £114 million for the 2007 year of account.
