LONDONThe U.K. government is seeking input on its proposals for the enforcement of the European Union's REACH chemicals regulation.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs published a consultation document Tuesday. Reponses will be accepted through June 4.
The REACH Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals proposal is the European Union's framework legislation for the management, control and use of chemicals, replacing much of the current patchwork of more than 40 pieces of legislation.
The regulation will come into force on June 1 this year.
The U.K. is required to have an enforcement and penalties regime in place no later than Dec. 1, 2008.
REACH will apply not only to chemicals manufacturers or suppliers, but also to any business which uses chemicals - so a wide range of businesses will be affected by the enforcement arrangements proposed.
U.K. authorities are encouraging industry, trade unions, environmental groups, health and safety professionals and others to comment on the enforcement proposals.
