WellPoint head to retire

INDIANAPOLIS--Larry Glasscock will retire as president and chief executive officer of WellPoint Inc. effective June 1.

Angela Braly, currently an executive vp and general counsel of the Indianapolis-based insurer, will replace Mr. Glasscock as president and CEO. Previously, she was president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Missouri.

Mr. Glasscock has served as president and CEO of WellPoint since 1999 and as chairman since November 2005. During his tenure, he oversaw the demutualization of Anthem Insurance and the initial public offering of Anthem Inc., as well as the company's merger with WellPoint Health Networks Inc. in 2004 and the 2005 acquisitions of WellPoint units Lumenos and WellChoice Inc., the parent company of Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield of New York.

During this time, WellPoint and its predecessor companies have grown from 6 million medical members and $6 billion in revenue to more than 34 million medical members and more than $60 billion in revenue.

Mr. Glasscock will continue to serve as chairman of the board for WellPoint, the largest managed care company in terms of membership.
