Swiss Re launches green initiative

ZURICH, Switzerland—Zurich, Switzerland-based reinsurer Swiss Reinsurance Co. has launched an initiative to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Swiss Re, which has already committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2012, is to offer employees financial support if they take measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in relation to transport, heating and electrical energy. Alternatives include low-emission hybrid cars, greater use of public transport and the instillation of solar panels or heat pumps, Swiss Re said in a statement.

From now until the end of 2011, Swiss Re will rebate each employee one half of the amount invested in such measures, up to a maximum of 5,000 Swiss francs ($4,060).

Ivo Menzinger, head of sustainability and emerging risk management at Swiss Re, said: "Swiss Re is actively engaged in mitigating climate change and its consequences. This program is an investment that will encourage our employees to make a personal contribution and further raises awareness of the issue."
