Don't let winter perils chill your firm's assets

SOMETIMES, EVEN small steps can prevent big headaches.

That's certainly true when it comes to protecting people and property against winter's perils. As we report on page 1, there's nothing particularly magical or mysterious about preparing for wintry exposures. In many cases, it's just a matter of applying common sense to common situations.

For example, even something as simple as making certain that windows are closed when a facility is shut down for the holidays may mean the difference between tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage caused by burst pipes. Reminding employees that winter driving requires an approach they might not follow in warmer seasons may actually mean the difference between life and death.

This isn't exactly rocket scienceĀ—it's more like Risk Management 101. But despite the simplicity involved in meeting many of cold weather's challenges, every year businesses suffer untold losses of money from predictable events.

Small steps can indeed make a big difference in minimizing winter's perils. There's no excuse not to take them sooner rather than later.
