CHART: GETTING A LIFT

Types of equipment to help health care professionals lift and move patients, and patients to move themselves

Portable sling-type lift: Wheeled device, with or without motor, lifts patient using a sling

Ceiling-mounted lift: Motor-powered device on ceiling tracks lifts patient in a sling

Sit-to-stand device: Gently pulls patient up from sitting position

Ambulation-assist device: Patient props elbows on wheeled device and walks

Bed converts into chair: Eliminates need to lift patient in and out of wheelchairs

Gait belts: Belts with handles to transfer from bed to chair, etc.

Slider boards or mats: Patients can reposition themselves in a bed or other flat surface

Transfer boards: Boards with moveable seats slide patient from wheelchair to toilet, etc.

Grab bar: Handle affixed to a bed, chair or wall

Height-adjustable bathtub: Allows patients to climb in and out on their own

Shower gurney: Allows patient to shower in a horizontal position
