Cash balance plans once were the fastest growing type of pension plan design until several lawsuits alleged that the design discriminated against older employees. However, recent federal pension reform legislation and a court ruling involving IBM Corp.'s cash balance plan rebut those claims of age bias, affirming the legitimacy of these plans.
