EXPLANATION OF TERMS USED

The eighth annual Business Insurance directory of rehabilitation management service providers lists companies that provide services included in the medical management or vocational rehabilitation of injured or ill individuals. These services must be available to employers on a direct, unbundled basis; companies that offer these services only in conjunction with other products and services are not included.

Listings begin with the company's address, phone and fax numbers and World Wide Web site address. Information on 1997 revenues is provided, including the percentage and dollar amount generated by direct rehabilitation services. To be included, companies must report information on gross revenues and generate at least $200,000 in gross revenues from rehabilitation services.

The staff section includes the total number of individuals and the number of professionals employed by the company in 1997 on a full-time equivalent basis. Certain specific degrees and designations held by the professionals are also listed, including CRC (Certified Rehabilitation Counselor), CDMS (Certified Disability Management Specialist), CRRN (Certified Rehabilitation Nurse) and CCM (Certified Case Manager). Social workers, physical therapists and occupational therapists are included in the category of degreed professionals. Staff figures do not include individuals hired on a consulting or per-case basis.

The customers section lists the total number of rehabilitation customers in 1997 as well as a breakout of the number of corporate and institutional employers, claims administrators/TPAs and insurance companies.

Information for 1997 on the number of rehabilitation cases closed, the number of independent medical examination cases and the number of expert opinion cases is listed under cases.

The year rehab services began and the name of the parent company are also provided.

The services section lists all rehabilitation services offered. Other services includes, but is not limited to, cost containment and utilization review services. Coverage lists the insurance lines for which rehabilitationservices are provided.

Service area lists the states or regions served, and charges and methods of billing are detailed under compensation. Names and titles of principal officers and a contact complete each listing.

The directory is published as an editorial service; there is no charge for companies to be listed. Although every effort is made to publish complete and accurate listings, BI is unable to verify all information provided by the companies.
