RISK MANAGEMENT IS INDEBTED TO BARLOW

Posted On: Jul. 19, 1998 12:00 AM CST

To the editor: I was saddened to read of Douglas Barlow's passing in the July 13 article, "Barlow Dies at 91, After Blazing Trails in Risk Management."

He was a risk management icon long before the term became a household word. Douglas never let his advancing years get in the way of his thirst for knowledge and his zeal for learning.

Vividly I recall my last meeting Doug at a Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc. conference exhibit booth. He donned a virtual reality helmet and laser weapons to experience firsthand an electronic battle against alien invaders.

All risk managers owe a debt of gratitude to Doug for his many contributions to our profession.

He truly was both a scholar and a gentleman.
