BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

QUALITY AWARD NAMED FOR QUERN

Reprints

NEW YORK-To help set a standard for quality in the risk management and insurance industry, the Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc. and Quality Insurance Congress are establishing the Arthur Quern Quality Award.

The award, which will be presented annually to individuals who have helped raise the quality of performance within the industry, honors the memory of Mr. Quern, the former chairman and chief executive officer of Aon Risk Services, who died last year (BI, Nov. 4, 1996).

Insurers, brokers, agents, third-party administrators, risk managers, risk management departments and others in the risk management and insurance community are eligible for consideration.

Nominations will be accepted until Dec. 19 and will be judged by a two-tier system. The screening committee, made up of four RIMS members and two QIC members, will make the initial review and select finalists.

The selection committee, made up of four RIMS members and four QIC members, then will determine the winner. In case of a tie, the president of The College of Insurance will choose the winner.

The award will be presented at the annual RIMS conference and exhibition.

"We felt an award recognizing quality in the industry would create an awareness of quality and would be a step in raising the bar," said Stephen M. Wilder, vp-risk management at The Walt Disney Co. in Burbank, Calif., and president of RIMS.

Prior to taking over the helm at RIMS, Mr. Wilder indicated that his major initiative as president would be to try to improve quality in the business (BI, April 7).

"Quality has remained an elusive concept in our industry. This award gives some definition to the standard to which we should all aspire by recognizing the achievements of those who have made a tangible contribution," Mr. Wilder said.

"Everybody who knew Art would describe him with adjectives that fit the definition of what we believe is quality," Mr. Wilder said of the choice to name the award for Mr. Quern.

The nomination application involves eight essay questions that evaluate the candidate in such areas as: an effective customer-oriented quality program; solved quality problems; innovative techniques or policies resulting in the superior quality of a risk management product or service; contribution toward the enhancement of ongoing quality programs; and training and continuous improvement.

Copies of the nomination application are available by contacting RIMS at 212-286-9364, ext. 248, or from the RIMS World Wide Web home page at www.rims.org.
