'WET' STILL THE WEATHER WORD THIS SUMMER IN U.K., IRELAND

Loss adjusters estimate that the torrential rain that has swept England, Wales and Ireland over the past few days will lead to losses running into millions of pounds.

After the wettest June this century, parts of the United Kingdom and Ireland have been deluged with the equivalent of one month's rain in a matter of days. The worst hit areas include southern and western England, the west of Wales and southern Ireland, where the Irish Farmers' Assn. estimated flood damage at (British pounds) 14 million ($20.1 million) as heavy rain continued to fall.

But commercial damage likely will be relatively light since the worst-hit regions mainly are rural and tourist areas.

At Kitty Keily's Bar in Clonmel, Ireland, (right), its owners used reduced prices and goldfish races across the barroom floor to attract patrons despite the weather conditions.
