SPENCER'S SCHOLARS: FOUNDATION PRESENTS 15 SCHOLARSHIPS

ATLANTA-The Spencer Educational Foundation Inc. awarded a little more than $100,000 in scholarships to 15 students and created a "Risk Manager in Residence" program at its annual meeting April 14 in Atlanta.

The 1997 Spencer Scholarship recipients were announced at the Spencer luncheon for RIMS chapter presidents and society directors held the same day.

In the undergraduate category, nine students were selected to receive $5,000 scholarship awards.

The scholarship recipients are: Eric Carlson, University of Hartford; Vi Cheng, Temple University; Karen Lasky, Georgia State University; Melissa McDonough, The College of Insurance; Kathleen Pritchett, University of Illinois; Arthur Randolph, Temple University; Marc Savasta, Temple University; Chad Scheller, University of Wisconsin at Madison; and David Zarovsky, The College of Insurance.

Victor Maroukian of The College of Insurance was awarded the 1997 Holwerda Memorial Award, which was slightly more than $5,000.

Four Spencer Scholars were selected to receive $10,000 scholarships. They are: David Anderson, University of Texas at Austin; Deborah Shaner-Little, Virginia Commonwealth University; Law-rence Williams, University of Pennsylvania-Wharton School; and Elizabeth Morrell, Georgia State University.

Karen Epermanis, University of South Carolina, was selected to receive a $10,000 pre-dissertation doctor of philosophy scholarship award.

In addition, the Spencer Foundation board authorized spending up to $15,000 to fund a "Risk Manager in Residence" program.

The grants will cover transportation and housing costs to college and universities that host this program where risk managers will be invited to speak to students and work with faculty.

The foundation is seeking risk managers to participate. The prospective risk manager must have: 10 years' minimum work experience; good communication skills; classroom experience; ideally CPCU or ARM teaching experience; senior specialist in his or her organization; and must be able to spend two to three days on a college or university campus.
