Redesigning the workers compensation experience through technology is at the heart of what ChronWell Inc. set out to accomplish when it developed its Recovry Central platform in 2018 to provide more effective early intervention in the claims process.

“The theory was, if we combined great technology with injured worker-centric services, we would see a reasonable decrease in the cost of claims,” said Joe Rubinsztain, co-founder and CEO of Plantation, Florida-based ChronWell. “Better outcomes and lower cost — that’s how Recovry was born.”

Coming from the electronic health records space, Mr. Rubinsztain said he saw an opportunity to provide an early intervention platform in workers comp that provides paperless and seamless communication to all stakeholders after a workplace accident.

“We’re dealing with a highly transactional industry where everything starts at the moment of the claim,” said Mr. Rubinsztain. “One of the main reasons (workers comp) gets to be complicated is because people feel that no one is really following up.”

With Recovry Central, after a workplace accident occurs, a manager can either call ChronWell or use its app to report the full details of the workplace incident, along with photos, forms, historical claims data and statements from the injured worker.

This information is fed into the company’s central platform, which uses artificial intelligence to crunch the data and create a personalized plan for engaging with the injured worker from the first episode of care through the life cycle of the injury.

Injured workers receive reminders from the app about appointments, transportation and physician instructions, and the company also employs concierges if a worker has an issue that requires human intuition and intervention, said Mr. Rubinsztain.

The app can also help identify the potential of the claim becoming expensive early on, and the constant communication reduces the likelihood of the “dangerous silence” that can occur after injured workers receive medical care but before they are released back to work or the employer has contacted them — a time when Mr. Rubinsztain says lawyers may be engaged.

Within nine months of its 2018 launch in California, Recovry Central began yielding its customers 22% savings in workers compensation claims costs; half of the savings from the pilot came from a 40% reduction in litigation, he said.

The company works primarily with self-insured employers, who agree to pay between $200 and $250 per incident, depending on volume, for the Recovry Central service, Mr. Rubinsztain said.
