HISTORY OF THE JIM ELLIS COMPANIES

Working with limited resources is not foreign to Jim Ellis. When he was ten years old, he and his family moved to the Atlanta Prison Farm property. His father was a foreman of the prison farm and his grandfather was superintendent. Growing up, Ellis worked on the farm, had a milk and paper route, did construction, ran a concessions business at Grant Park, and ran a laundry route. By the time he completed West Georgia College and Georgia State University in 1957 with a BBA in general management, he had also worked as a prison guard and foreman, sold insurance, IBM Machines and real estate, and held various other jobs to work his way through college. After returning from serving two years in the Army, Ellis held a variety of jobs until he found his place in the automobile business with General Motors in 1960.

In 1970, Jim Ellis and his wife, Billie Ellis, took the biggest financial plunge of their lives to establish their own dealership. They sold all their assets, used all their savings, cashed in Billie’s retirement fund from 15 years of service at Georgia Tech, and borrowed the balance in 1971 to begin Jim Ellis Volkswagen. When the totals were in, the plunge amounted to $35,000 in assets and $165,000 in loans.

Today Jim Ellis is a well-known, reputable automotive group of multiple dealerships and hundreds of wonderful employees.

Jim and Billie Ellis’ children, Karen, Kristi, Jimmy and Greg (deceased), have all worked or presently hold positions in the family business. Jimmy is President and Chief Executive Officer for the dealerships. He began in 1971 as a technician trainee for the dealership and developed through phases in departments as service writer, salesman, manager and general manager.
In Atlanta, the “Jim Ellis” name means reputable dealerships and satisfied customers. The Ellis family has been equally impressive with contributions of time, money, and resources to the auto industry, associations and community and charitable organizations.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT – “OUR CREDO”

Our guiding principle is to be the best automobile retail organization for the franchises we represent in serving the Atlanta communities. Jim Ellis Pledges to be the best in delivering quality, vehicle sales and service experiences to our clients and prospects. We also pledge to continue to enhance our long standing reputation of fostering a family atmosphere that creates high employee satisfaction and outstanding customer satisfaction.
At Jim Ellis Automotive dealerships, you can always………….“Expect the Best”
