BROKERS:
London-based Cooper Gay (Holdings) Ltd. said Ian Barnes has joined its terrorism and political risks team. Previously, he was a divisional director at Lockton Inc.

Charles P. Whittaker has joined Lockton Cos. L.L.C. as senior vp in the San Francisco office. Previously, he was senior vp at Willis Group Holdings Ltd.

INSURERS:
Ace Ltd. has named Brian Dowd as vice chairman Ace Ltd. and Ace Group Holdings. Mr. Dowd, who is based in Philadelphia, also remains chief executive officer for insurance in North America.

Jonathan Young Harleysville, Pa.-based Harleysville Insurance Co. has named Jonathan Young as senior vp and chief claims officer. Previously, he was a managing partner and member of the litigation group for Sills Cummis & Gross P.C.

London-based XL Insurance has promoted Andrew Malcolm to deputy energy underwriting manager. Most recently, he was senior onshore energy underwriter for Europe and Asia Pacific.

The Warren, N.J.-based Chubb Group of Insurance Cos. has named Stuart A. Spencer to chief operating officer of worldwide accident and health, effective June 1. Most recently, he was president of the worldwide accident and health division of American International Group Inc.'s life companies.

Aviva North America, a unit of Aviva P.L.C., has named Richard Hoskins as Chicago-based executive vp and chief financial officer of the North American region. Most recently, he was executive vp and chief financial officer at Old Mutual (U.S.) Holdings Inc.

ASSOCIATIONS:
The Washington-based Surety & Fidelity Assn. of America has elected Thomas Kunkel as the chair of the board for 2009-1010. Mr. Kunkel is president and chief executive officer of Travelers Bond in Hartford, Conn.
Also elected to the Surety & Fidelity board, Tracey Vispoli has been named vice chair. Ms Vispoli is vp, worldwide financial fidelity manager of the Chubb Group of Insurance Cos. in Warren, N.J.
MANAGED CARE:
Independence Blue Cross has made several senior-level appointments in their Philadelphia office. They are:
  • Alan Krigstein as senior vp and chief financial officer. He succeeds John Foos, who retired in November. Previously, Mr. Krigstein was senior vp of finance, CFO and treasurer at AmeriHealth Mercy Family of Cos.
  • John R. Janney Jr. has been promoted to senior vp of e-business and support services. Previously, he was the vp of e-business and enrollment services.
  • Stephan R. Roker has been promoted to senior vp of operations. Previously, he was vp of processing services.
OTHER PROVIDERS:
Buck Consultants L.L.C. has named Chad Hueffmeier a principal in its New York office. Most recently, he was executive director of global portfolio solutions at Morgan Stanley Investment Management.
Also at Buck, Hal Knox has been named a principal in the New York office. Previously, he was a vp at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.

Watson Wyatt Worldwide has named Paul Fulcher principal actuary in its insurance and financial services practice in London. Most recently, he was managing director in risk advisory and capital solutions group at UBS.

Art Dickerson Jacksonville, Fla.-based Paul Davis National, the large loss specialists for Paul David Restoration Inc., has named Art Dickerson as executive vp of business development. Most recently, he was assistant vp for Paul Davis Restoration Inc. Mr. Dickerson is based in Greenville, Ind.

Hartford, Conn.-based Conning & Co. has named Stephen W. Keep as a director. Previously, he was business development manager for insurance companies at Wellington Management Co. L.L.P.

Sue Barham has rejoined London-based Barlow Lyde & Gilbert L.L.P. as partner. Previously, Ms. Barham was a partner with Gates & Partners.

Aon Consulting Worldwide has named Barbara Hawes as senior vp and national pharmacy practice leader of its health and benefits practice in Houston. Most recently, she was a national practice leader with Towers Perrin.

BROKERS:
Edgewood Partners Insurance Center has named Denise Vance as principal in its San Mateo, Calif., office. Most recently, she was a vp at Willis Insurance Services of California Inc.
Also at E.P.I.C., Scott Gaddy has been named principal in its San Francisco office. Previously, he was president of Gaddy Ward & Co.

Lisa Rafferty Aon Corp. has promoted Lisa Rafferty to senior vp in Phoenix. Ms. Rafferty assumes this position in addition to her current role as leader of Aon services health & benefits practice.

Pacific Alliance Insurance Brokers has named Linda R. Lai as principal in Honolulu. Previously, she was chairman of Griffing Swan & Lai Insurance Brokers Inc.

John Moreno Salt Lake City-based Leavitt Group Enterprises Inc. has named John Moreno president of its benefits services division. Previously, he was employee benefits practice leader and Southern California regional benefits manager at HUB International Ltd.

INSURERS:
AIU Holdings Inc. has promoted Matthew Schardt to regional underwriting manager of national accounts for the Chicago region, effective June 1. Most recently, he was senior underwriter of corporate accounts and the real estate/financial institutions divisions.
Also at AIU, Marya Propis has been named vp of Lexington Insurance Co. and chief operating officer of Risk Specialists Cos. Inc. Most recently, she was senior vp of the sales and marketing department at the Commercial Insurance Group Inc.

London-based XL Insurance has named Simon Murray as regional manager-aviation. Previously, he was senior aviation underwriter at Catlin Group Ltd.

Alex Hindson London-based Amlin P.L.C. has named Alex Hindson as head of group risk. Previously, he was head of enterprise risk management for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region at Aon Global Risk Consulting.
David Hancock Also with Amlin, David Hancock has been named leading class underwriter, property and package in London. Previously, he was property underwriter at Zurich Financial Services Ltd.


New York-based Liberty International Underwriters has named Tim Kania as senior vp of construction for its North America and South America operations. Previously, he was vp of the property engineered risk department at Munich Reinsurance America Inc.

ASSOCIATIONS:
Terrie Norris has been elected senior vp of the American Society of Safety Engineers, effective July 1. Ms. Norris is risk control manager for Bickmore Risk Services & Consulting in Long Beach, Calif.

OTHER PROVIDERS:
EMB Consultancy L.L.P. said that Ron Swanstrom has joined the Chicago office as senior consultant. Most recently, he was senior vp and senior actuarial officer at CNA Insurance Cos.

Anne DeFusco Meritain Health has named Anne DeFusco to president and chief operating officer. She has been a consultant to the company since the beginning of the year. Ms. DeFusco is based in Connecticut and works throughout the various regional operating centers.

Michael Barfield Charleston, S.C.-based Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms L.L.C. said Michael Barfield has been named member. Previously, he served as special counsel for the firm.

Mercer L.L.C. has named Sharan Mitchell Carlisle as market leader-Great Lakes region. Previously, she was large market sales director in the retirement services division at Wachovia Corp. Ms. Carlisle is based in Charlotte, N.C.
Also at Mercer, Steve Gordon has been named market leader-southeast region for its outsourcing business in Orlando. Most recently, he was director of institutional sales in the retirement services division at Wachovia Corp.

Ann DeFusco

NAME: Ann DeFusco

NEW JOB TITLE: Cheshire, Conn.-based president and chief operating officer of Meritain Health Inc.

PREVIOUS POSITION: Minneapolis-based chief administrative officer for AmeriChoice, a unit of UnitedHealth Group Inc.

GOALS FOR NEW POSITION: In my new position, I will be working closely with each leadership team to enhance operations and boost client service to help Meritain Health continue its mission to offer customized, self-funded health plans that focus on reducing health care costs for clients by getting employees healthier.

INDUSTRY CHALLENGES: Rising health care costs and creating customized plans to reduce costs for our clients. We also need to monitor health care reform closely to adhere to new laws and regulations, such as new COBRA premiums under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to ensure clients comply and understand.

FIRST EXPERIENCE IN JOB MARKET: My first job was at Ernst & Young, where I served as an auditor. I stayed with them for three years before moving on to Ford Consumer Finance (Co. Inc.).

OUTSIDE THE INDUSTRY, A DREAM JOB: My dream job is to have my own cooking show.

WHAT I FEEL MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT: I am most passionate about my family. I have two beautiful daughters and a devoted husband, who I am learning to play golf with. In my spare time, I enjoy running, cooking and spending weekends working on my garden.
