Fortune 1000 pension freezes accelerate

The number of Fortune 1000 companies that have frozen one or more of their pension plans has surged since 2004, with the pace of freezes showing no sign of slowing, according to consulting firm Towers Watson & Co. in New York.

In 2004: 45 of the firms had frozen at least one of their pension plans.

In 2005: 71 of the firms had frozen at least one of their pension plans.

In 2006: 113 of the firms had frozen at least one of their pension plans.

In 2007: 136 of the firms had frozen at least one of their pension plans.

In 2008: 169 of the firms had frozen at least one of their pension plans.

In 2009: 190 of the firms had frozen at least one of their pension plans.

In 2010: 208 of the firms had frozen at least one of their pension plans.

In 2011: 237 of the firms had frozen at least one of their pension plans.
