Not surprisingly, the average account balance in 401(k) plans is significantly higher for older participants than younger participants, MSN Money reports. For example, employees between 55 and 64 had an average 401(k) plan account balance of $232,379 at year-end 2020, which is about eight times greater than those between 25 and 34, a Vanguard report found.
