The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited two Michigan companies after two workers were killed during a power plant demolition, the agency announced Tuesday.
Adamo Demolition Co. and SCM Engineering Demolition Inc. had been contracted to demolish the Killen Power Plant near Manchester, Ohio, when, on Dec. 9, 2020, falling steel beams killed two workers at the job site.
OSHA inspectors cited the companies for violations of the general duty clause and failure to inspect the site regularly to detect potential hazards during demolition such as deteriorated floors and walls or loosened material. OSHA proposed penalties totaling $181,000 to Adamo for willful, repeat, serious and other-than-serious citations. SCM Engineering faces penalties of $12,000 for three serious violations.
OSHA said the inspectors also found that the companies allowed their employees to work in hazardous conditions without adding shoring, bracing or other means to steady the structure and failed to train them on identifying hazards.
Both companies have 15 business days to dispute the findings.
