BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Hawaii appoints Colin Hayashida as insurance commissioner

Colin M. Hayashida was named Hawaii insurance commissioner effective Jan. 1, according to a statement by the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.

Mr. Hayashida replaces Gordon I. Ito, who served as insurance commissioner from 2010 until late last year. Mr. Ito has returned to the role of chief deputy insurance commissioner, according to the statement released Thursday.

As head of the insurance division, Mr. Hayashida now oversees 1,551 insurers and more than 73,000 insurance producers. The Hawaii insurance industry writes $19.8 billion in premiums.

“With ongoing federal health care reform and the impacts of natural disasters in the state, the insurance industry remains fluid with significant issues that we must monitor and navigate,” Mr. Hayashida said in the statement.

Mr. Hayashida has worked at the insurance division since 2000, most recently as insurance rate and policy analysis manager.
