Equipment to help remove toxic fumes and apparatus to help with manual, repetitive lifting are among new purchases for 38 employers in Ohio set to receive a total of $945,000 in safety grants from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, the BWC announced Friday.
BWC’s Safety Intervention Grant program matches an employer’s investment 3-to-1, up to a maximum of $40,000 to purchase equipment designed to substantially reduce or eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses, according to a statement.
The latest grant recipients represent 31 counties statewide and range from $10,000 to $40,000 for each grant.
“With equipment purchases, these employers can prevent injuries to their workers and reduce workers’ compensation costs,” Abe Al-Tarawneh, superintendent of BWC’s division of safety and hygiene, said in the statement. “Safety improvements in the workplace help return more workers home safely each day.”
The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation’s Joint Committee of Agency Rule Review is now weighing a proposed rule that would set up reimbursements for the bureau to pay for counseling and coaching sessions that help injured workers overcome issues like negative thinking, poor coping skills, lack of motivation and other behavioral barriers to recovery, a spokeswoman told Business Insurance on Friday.
