Former California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner was the top vote-getter in his bid to return to the job in the state’s primary election Tuesday.
According to a news report, Mr. Poizner, who ran as an independent, received 831,939 votes, or 41.6% of the total in the election. Running second was the Democratic Party-backed Ricardo Lara, who received 731,284 votes, or 38.3% of the total votes cast. Under state rules, the two men will vie for the post in a runoff in November’s election.
Current Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones, who was running for state attorney general, was in fourth and last place in his bid to become state attorney general.
Mr. Poizner served as California Insurance Commissioner in 2007-2011 after running as a Republican. In 2010, he sought to penalize insurers with ties to companies that did business with Iran. A group of five insurer trade organizations filed a petition with the California Office of Administrative Law, alleging that Mr. Poizner's actions were illegal. A settlement was reached in 2012, when Mr. Jones was commissioner.
California has approved the state’s first surety bond program for the cannabis industry, according to a statement Wednesday from the office of State Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones.
