BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Roofing firm penalized for fall hazards

Federal workplace safety regulators have cited a Massachusetts roofing contractor and proposed $299,324 in penalties for exposing employees to fall hazards.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Luis Guallpa — doing business as Milford, Massachusetts-based Guallpa Contracting Corp. — for exposing workers to fall and other hazards at a Nashua, New Hampshire work site, the agency said Tuesday in a statement.

OSHA inspectors observed six of Guallpa’s employees working on a roof without fall protection, employees using ladders unsafely and failing to use head protection, according to the statement. The agency cited the employer for exposing employees to fall hazards of up to 25 feet, for ladder and head protection violations and for failing to provide effective training.

OSHA previously cited Guallpa for similar hazards in 2014 and 2015, according to the statement.

“Fall protection is required when employees are working at heights of six feet or higher,” Rosemarie Cole, OSHA New Hampshire area office director in Concord, New Hampshire, said in the statement. “This employer’s continued failure to follow safety standards is placing employees at risk of serious injury or death.”

A company spokesperson declined to comment on the citations and proposed fines.
