AIG appoints former CIA lawyer as senior legal officer

American International Group Inc. on Tuesday named a former top CIA lawyer as the chief legal officer of its general insurance unit.
Caroline Krass, who was appointed general counsel of the CIA by President Obama and served as the agency’s chief legal officer from 2014 to 2017, will be senior vice president and general counsel, general insurance, and deputy general counsel of AIG, the insurer said in a statement.
The appointment is effective March 2018.
Ms. Krass will oversee the general insurance global legal department and serve as a member of the executive leadership team for the unit, the statement said.
She will report to Peter Zaffino, CEO of general insurance, and Lucy Fato, executive vice president and general counsel for AIG.
After leaving the CIA last year, Ms. Krass became a partner in the Washington office of law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher L.L.P. where she chaired the National Security Practice Group.
“Caroline has a distinguished background in providing counsel on an extensive range of complex legal matters, both domestically and internationally,” Mr. Zaffino said in the statement.
The recruitment of Ms. Krass is one of several high-level appointments made by AIG since Brian Duperreault returned to head the insurer last year.
