BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

2017 Women to Watch: Shannon Groeber

Shannon Groeber
Senior vice president
JLT Specialty USA, a unit of Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group P.L.C.
Philadelphia
Age: 36

It was Shannon Groeber’s delay in finding a summer job that eventually led to her successful career in insurance.

While she was in college, her father, who worked in Chubb Corp.’s information technology and business intelligence group, mentioned to a friend who worked at Gulf Insurance Group that Ms. Groeber had not yet found vacation work, which led to a job at the insurer.

Her time at Gulf over several vacation periods led to her decision to make insurance her career. “I didn’t really understand to what degree I would enjoy working with the team at Gulf,” which became a subsidiary of St. Paul Travelers Cos., said Ms. Groeber, now a senior vice president at JLT Specialty USA, a unit of Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group P.L.C. in Philadelphia.

After graduation, she worked at Gulf for a year before moving to CNA Financial Corp., where she spent almost four years on the underwriting side, which included exposure to technology errors and omissions and the early days of cyber liability.

She joined Aon P.L.C. in 2007, and was there seven years, followed by a short period at Lockton Cos. L.L.C. Ms. Groeber joined JLT in 2014 after learning of the company’s expansion into the United States.

“I knew I had to be part of it, the opportunity to really create something from the ground up,” said Ms. Groeber, who is the team leader for JLT Specialty USA’s cyber and E&O practice.

Ms. Groeber and her husband of six years, Chris, who is a financial planner, are raising sons Reed, 5, and Tate, 2½. Her husband’s support “allows me to throw myself into work,” she said.

Patrick Donnelly, president and deputy CEO of JLT Specialty USA in Chicago, said that to be successful, “you have to be smart, you have to be agile, you have to be able to think on your feet, you have to be open to new ways of approaching things, to be comfortable being uncomfortable,” and that Ms. Groeber meets all those criteria.

“She is fantastic, and as professional and as effective as any broker that you would want covering your company,” said Min Ok, director of treasury operations and risk management for McLean, Virginia-based media company Tegna Corp.
