Security breach shuts down OSHA electronic reporting application

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s web-based form to allow employers to electronically submit required injury and illness data has been temporarily suspended due to a potential security breach. 

On Aug. 1, OSHA launched the injury tracking application as part of the compliance effort for its controversial electronic record-keeping rule, but a note on the website on Tuesday said technical difficulties were making some of the ITA pages unavailable.

An OSHA spokesperson said the agency received an alert on Monday from the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team in the Department of Homeland Security that indicated there was a potential compromise of user information for the injury tracking application, according to an emailed statement. 

“At this time, one company appears to have been affected and that company has been notified of the issue,” the statement said. “Access to the ITA has been temporarily suspended as OSHA works with the system developer to examine the issue to determine the extent of the problem.”

In late June, the agency set a new Dec. 1 compliance date for electronic data submission after announcing in mid-May that it would delay compliance. However, it also announced plans to issue a separate proposal to reconsider, revise or remove other provisions of the electronic record-keeping rule. 

“It is unclear whether this security breach will impact or further delay the compliance date for the submission of employer injury and illness information, which is Dec. 1, 2017,” according to a blog post by Tressi Cordaro, a shareholder with law firm Jackson Lewis P.C. based in Reston, Virginia.
