Clark receives Goodell; Nickel named Risk Manager of the Year

PHILADELPHIA — The Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc. bestowed several awards during a Monday luncheon at its annual conference in Philadelphia, including the Harry and Dorothy Goodell Award.

The Goodell Award is named for RIMS’ first president and honors individuals who have furthered the goals of RIMS and the discipline of risk management.

The honor was presented to Scott Clark, senior vice president and enterprise risk management consultant at Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area and retired risk and benefits officer for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

“I’m grateful I had the opportunity to work in a field with true professionals, and to have worked for employers who understood and embraced the value that a well-risk managed entity to brings to the stakeholders of an organization,” Mr. Clark said.

Specifically, Mr. Clark said he was grateful to Miami-Dade Public Schools for supporting him for over 30 years before his retirement in 2016. Regarding his current position at Gallagher, Mr. Clark said he was “energized by the opportunity to continue with this industry and RIMS, and I am extremely grateful to have this opportunity.”

“It’s important to make sure that the new generation of risk managers and students in attendance today understand the value that RIMS bring to the industry and how their involvement will enhance their careers,” Mr. Clark said. “In addition to the technical aspect of learning your trade, your interaction with the best and brightest of this industry will enable you to be successful throughout your career.”

Also among the award winners on Monday was Loren Nickel, Sunnyvale, California-based director of business risk and insurance for Google Inc. and its parent company, Alphabet Inc., who was honored as the 2017 RIMS Risk Manager of the Year.

William Lehman, insurance specialist at Cook Group Inc. in Bloomington, Indiana, was named RIMS Rising Star of the Year, which honors up-and-coming risk management professionals under the age of 35 or who have seven or fewer years of professional experience in the industry.

Debra Samuel, manager of insurance and risk management at Arconic Inc., received the RIMS Ambassador Group Award, which recognizes individuals for their continued service with RIMS.

Michael Ratto, risk procurement manager at Kraemer North America L.L.C., was given the Cristy Award, which recognizes the person who earned the highest marks on the three exams required to earn the Associate of Risk Management designation.

The J.D. Power 2016 Large Commercial Insurance Study, which is conducted in association with RIMS, named Lockton Cos. L.L.C. as the top-performing broker for 2016 and XL Catlin as the top-performing insurer for 2016.

Inductees to the RIMS Risk Management Honor Roll were Benjamin Evans, executive director of the University of Pennsylvania Office of Risk Management and Insurance; Juliana J. Keaton, director of insurance at CSX Transportation Inc.; and Scot Schwarting, director of risk management at Whirlpool Corp.
