BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Nurse case managers to expedite San Bernardino comp claims

Those injured in the San Bernardino terrorist attack in California will now have nurse case managers to help expedite their workers compensation claims.

The County of San Bernardino has hired Sherman Oaks, California-based IW Care Connection Inc. to help manage the process, the county said Tuesday in a statement.

The announcement comes in the wake of public outcry that employees injured in the attack on Dec. 2, 2015, saw delays in treatment. The county pinned the blame on medical providers, according to the statement.

“Working closely with the county employees who have had difficulty with the state workers compensation system, it became clear to the county that the primary issue has been health care providers not submitting sufficient documentation describing proposed treatments in a complete and timely manner,” the statement reads. “When providers submitted the correct state-mandated paperwork, the county has secured the necessary approvals in no more than two days, far short than the five days allowed by state law.”

Earlier this month, the county board established the December 2nd Workers’ Comp Claim Expeditor Reserve, a fund that earmarks $100,000 to pay for an outside firm to provide a proactive review of workers compensation claims, status and outreach to help minimize delays and interruptions for victims of the attack.

In the attack, 14 people were killed and 22 seriously injured when a disgruntled employee-turned-terrorist and his wife fired into a rented banquet room at the county’s Inland Regional Center during a holiday party.

IW Care Connection provides a number of case management services under workers comp.

According to the county’s statement, the firm is charged with coordinating care and procedures, keeping employees informed and what their options are, and to “proactively identify potential milestones and/or impediments in cases,” among other duties.
