A study by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre has found that damage to Europe's critical infrastructure from climate hazards could triple by the 2020s, reported Phys.org.

Damage to critical infrastructures in the energy, transport, industrial and social sector is likely to multiply six-fold by mid-century, added the study.

Damage could top the current annual estimate of €3.4 billion ($3.74 billion) by the end of the 21st century, said the study.

Researchers said that southern European nations are most likely to be affected from climate hazards throughout the 21st century.
