Japan expects damage from Kumamoto earthquakes to reach $42.1 billion

The Japanese government expects damage in Kumamoto and Oita prefectures from the recent Kumamoto earthquakes to total 2.4 trillion Japanese yen ($21.96 billion) to JPY 4.6 trillion ($42.1 billion), The Journal reported citing the Associated Press.

Damage to buildings ranges from JPY 1.6 trillion to JPY 3.1 trillion, while damage to infrastructure amounts to JPY 400 billion to JPY 700 billion.

Damage to water, gas, electricity and sewerage systems totals JPY 100 billion whereas damage to other structures such as farmland and parks ranges between JPY 400 billion and JPY 700 billion.
