Michael G. Kerner has been named to the new position of executive vice president and head of strategy and risk management at Everest Re Group Ltd., the reinsurer said.
Mr. Kerner most recently was CEO of general insurance at Zurich Insurance Group Ltd. in Switzerland.
“With his experience and knowledge of the industry, Mike will be instrumental in the continued success and strategy of our organization,” Everest Re President and CEO Dominic J. Addesso said in a statement.
Mr. Kerner, who will be based in Liberty Corner, New Jersey, left Zurich last September for personal reasons.
He was one of several top managers at Zurich who exited the insurer last year.
In other appointments that Everest Re announced Wednesday, the Hamilton, Bermuda-based company named Jonathan M. Zaffino to the new post of president of its North American insurance division.
Mr. Zaffino joined Everest Re last year as president of Everest national/U.S. insurance operations.
“In this expanded role, he will assume oversight of our Canadian insurance operation, which has been realigned with the U.S. into a North American region, ensuring a continued alliance with our businesses that share many client, product and distribution relationships,” Everest Re said in a statement.
The company said Mr. Zaffino, who will be based in New York and Liberty Corner, New Jersey, also will oversee its accident and health and insurance claims operations.
Mr. Zaffino is the brother of Peter Zaffino, who is president and CEO of insurance brokerage Marsh L.L.C.
In addition, Everest Re said that John P. Doucette has been named president and CEO of its reinsurance division and will be based in Liberty Corner, New Jersey, rising from executive vice president and chief underwriting officer.
The appointments are effective April 1, Everest Re said.
