BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

OSHA cites logger after falling tree kills worker

An Illinois employer has been cited by federal workplace safety regulators after an employee died from blunt force trauma due to a falling tree.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Columbia, Illinois-based American Design Builders L.L.C. after the 46-year-old worker was killed when a tree inadvertently hit him during logging operations on a 100-acre Mississippi River levy site, the agency said Tuesday in a statement.

American Design Builders is facing $2,400 in proposed fines for a serious violation due to the failure to train workers in CPR or emergency first aid as required and for an other-than-serious violation for not providing a written training certification record, according to the citations.

“When a job site has limited access to medical facilities, employers must train workers in emergency first aid and make provisions for prompt emergency treatment if it's needed,” Aaron Priddy, OSHA's area director in Fairview Heights, Illinois, said in the statement. “Loggers deal with massive weights and the momentum of falling, rolling, and sliding trees and logs exposing them to dangerous hazards on a daily basis. Employers need to plan for all scenarios.”

A company spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment.
