BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Illinois roofing contractor cited for fall hazards

An Illinois roofing contractor is facing $115,500 in proposed fines from federal regulators for exposing its workers to fall hazards.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Norridge, Illinois-based Ziggy’s Roofing Inc. after inspectors saw employees working on residential roofing projects without fall protection at two Chicago-area job sites within a month, the agency said Tuesday in a statement.

The agency issued three repeat, one willful and one serious safety citation against the company for not providing its employees with proper fall protection, such as guardrails, safety nets or personal fall prevention devices, among other violations, according to the citations.

Falls are a leading cause of death for construction workers, accounting for nearly 40% of all construction fatalities in 2014, according to OSHA. The agency has inspected Ziggy’s Roofing four times since 2003 for exposing workers to fall hazards at Chicago-area construction sites, according to the release.

“Ziggy’s Roofing continues to ignore OSHA standards and is failing to protect its employees on the job,” Angeline Loftus, OSHA’s area director for the Chicago North Office in Des Plaines, Illinois, said in a statement. “OSHA will continue to monitor this employer for compliance and do everything in its power to keep workers safely out of life-threatening working conditions.”

A company spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment.
