2015 40 Under 40 Broker Awards: Andrew Stergiou

Vice president

Alliant Insurance Services Inc.

Age: 37

While at a Sunday afternoon New York Knicks game this year with his 2-year-old son, Andrew Stergiou got a text from a contractor client with a burst pipe in his office.

He picked up his son and left during the third quarter to assess the damage, take pictures and file a report.

That drop-everything mentality is one reason Mr. Stergiou, a New York-based vice president with Alliant Insurance Services Inc., boasts an average 98% client retention rate since 2006, and a 100% retention rate in 2014 for the insurance program he runs for the International Door Association, which includes providers of doors and gates.

Mr. Stergiou specializes in placing coverage for construction companies and associations, and his biggest challenge is ensuring clients don't have residential exclusions in their insurance policies — a common theme among clients that come to him.

“I had one client that was paying over $100,000 for a general liability policy. All he does is residential work, and it had a complete residential exclusion on the policy,” he explained.

It's difficult but rewarding work: “It's good to help people who don't know what they need” when it comes to insurance, he said.

“The guy is just on his game,” said Larry Heischman, risk manager of San Francisco-based garage door manufacturer R & S Erection Inc. and a client of Mr. Stergiou's since 2014. “He's excellent at doing policy comparisons and knowing the marketplace and putting together a program that's superior to everything out there,” Mr. Heischman said. “He's just astounding.”
