BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Enterprise risk management gets big push

HOUSTON — The Public Risk Management Association is placing a great deal of emphasis on enterprise risk management, according to its president.

Speaking at the opening general session of PRIMA's annual meeting in Houston Monday, PRIMA President Regan Rychetsky, director of enterprise risk management at the Texas Health & Human Services Commission, said that PRIMA is “striving to keep you ahead of the curve” regarding ERM. Mr. Rychetsky also noted that impact of severe weather including flooding in Texas and other nearby states last month. “Every day we work to protect our entities,” he said, but added that “Mother Nature sometimes reminds us” that there are some things that risk managers cannot control.

Also during the opening session, Austin, Texas-based author and business consultant Thom Singer described dealing with the “social media-crazy world” in which people now live both their professional and personal lives.

He used an equation of Albert Einstein's with new variables to describe networking — E=mc2. But in this case, E equals “engagement” while the mc2 equals “meaningful connections between two or more people.”

Mr. Singer stressed the importance of interpersonal engagement in what he considers a world dominated by digital tools. “When you're with people, you need to choose people,” rather than electronic devices, he said.
