Nigeria: National Assembly wants Shell to pay nearly $4 billion for 2011 oil spill

The National Assembly of Nigeria has said that Royal Dutch Shell P.L.C. must pay $3.96 billion for a 2011 oil spill in the country, Reuters reported.

The spill occurred at Shell's offshore Bonga oilfield. The decision comes after a report submitted by the country's National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, which said around 40,000 barrels was spilled when a tanker was loading crude. The agency had earlier suggested a fine of $5 billion.
