Turkey: Researchers say major earthquake possible near Istanbul

Researchers from Turkey and the U.S.-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology say a large earthquake is possible near Istanbul because of the North Anatolian Fault, reports domain-B.

A seismic gap beneath the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul would probably be the spot of the next major quake. The earthquake could be of magnitude-7 or higher, a researcher at MIT said. The 1999 quake that occurred in Izmit city near Istanbul had claimed thousands of lives.
