BI’s Article search uses Boolean search capabilities. If you are not familiar with these principles, here are some quick tips.

To search specifically for more than one word, put the search term in quotation marks. For example, “workers compensation”. This will limit your search to that combination of words.

To search for a combination of terms, use quotations and the & symbol. For example, “hurricane” & “loss”.

Insurer M&A activity slowly rebounding in first half of 2014: Clyde & Co.

There was a small increase in the number of merger and acquisitions deals in the insurance sector during the first half of 2014, according to a report by law firm Clyde & Co. L.L.P. in London published Sunday.

In the first half of 2014, there were 192 M&A deals worldwide, according to the report, compared with 162 in the first half of 2013 and 157 in the second half of 2013.

According to the report, “after a three-year slide, activity in the sector appears to be recovering.”

In the first half of 2011 there were 289 deals; 266 in the second half of 2011; 244 in the first half of 2012; and 200 in the second half of 2012, according to data from Clyde & Co.

“A number of environmental factors that were identified last year as being critical to creating M&A activity have not yet happened; for example, there is still considerable excess capital in the market, the pricing cycle is stubbornly soft (other than in the aviation sector due to recent events) and the eurozone remains fragile,” the report noted.

“Nevertheless, there have certainly been more deals, and there is a sense of renewed energy around transactions across” the insurance and reinsurance market, it said.
