Canada: Shipping accidents continue in British Columbia despite safety steps

Federal documents have shown that shipping accidents continue to happen in British Columbia waters, despite the province's pilots increasing safety measures, The Vancouver Sun reports.

The documents indicate that cargo and cruise ships with British Columbia pilots on board were involved in 20 collisions or "risks of collisions" in the province's waters in 2013, the newspaper reported. A local campaigner said increased oil tanker traffic "means drastically increased risk" and "it's not a matter of if a spill will happen, it’s a matter of when."
